Welcome to the UK Home Built Boat Rally

Caitlin and Wideawake

Formed in 2006 by Alec Jordan, UK-HBBR is a loose collection of like-minded individuals with a common interest in building boats at home. The aim is to organise several meetings around the country where home boat builders can get together to have a chat, see each others boats, sail in other boats, and talk about the trials, tribulations and rewards of building your own boat.

Details of meetings past and future will be posted on this blog, Keep an eye on the future events page.

2009 has been a fabulous year for the HBBR, partly because the weather gods have come up trumps for a change and provided some memorably sunsoaked boating. The Barton Turf meet was great, as ever, and the row from Lechlade to the boat show at Beale Park was fabulous fun. And the annual meet at the Cotswold Water Park saw the usual fine crop of new boats on their maiden voyages.

If you’ve built a boat, are planning to, or just want to come along to see what its all about, we’d love to see you.

There is no membership fee, formal organisation, or red tape. If you have read this far consider yourself a member. If you want to keep up with the gossip and chat between meetings, sign up for the forum. You’ll find a link somewhere around here.

  1. @ukhbbr Paul, the hosting/domain solution might be available. Had a conversation with Alec about this at East Wemyss today. Will be in touch soonish.

  2. Andy Boulter- Re your 12 1/2. I think Michael Ritchie (sp) had one built in strip up north. Was an art. in Classic Boat(?) a while back. I saw, yesterday, a guy who chamfers the strips to form a groove on the outside and puts all the strips on close spaced moulds (300mm) then epoxies it all at once. Says it takes him 1 day a side!! on a 18/20ft. This was at La Rochelle boat show.

  3. Hi Pat,
Thanks for the praise, seems like a great idea – not all of us are into racing, or indeed, sailing. Not sure we have even an informal organisation! Non the less things happen. Link added.

  4. Great boats and site. Can we link up? We’re the Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Asociation (often known as the Knackered Old Boats Society!) and are interested in restoring and sailing and racing old boats. We’ve got similar interests when it comes to the wood and epoxy and techniques and, like yourselves, we’re a very informal organisation based on the internet with several meeting a year and an active forum. I’ve added a link from our site to yours, please could you do the same.

  5. hello,
i was wondering if it would be possible for me to attend the ullswater steam rally at the weekend with my home built steam launch?
    regards – Alan Salisbury

    Best wishes

  7. Hi everyone

I shall follow this one up at a later date. Got an ex RNLI lifeboat launch which still requires the final fit out so I will see you soon. I have got the plans for Joel Whites Haven 12 so this will be the winter project Trying to work out how to build it in strip planks but time will tell.

    Cheers andy Boulter

  8. Hi Folks

this looks good. I’d like to make it to Ullswater, but don’t know at this stage if it will work out.

You can offer email updates from WordPress – check out this FAQ:
    http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/

I’ve done this on my blog here (tho’ it’s not been updated for a while), so I can’t remember the details. But I’m happy to help if needed.

I’ll be subscribing via RSS. (If anyone wants to know why to use RSS and how, check out:
    http://www.commoncraft.com/rss_plain_english
Now I’ve discovered RSS, I’m avoiding email subscriptions wherever RSS is available!)

    cheers

    Osbert

  9. Thanks Gavin.

The free WordPress server won’t host the Subscribe plugin (and other goodies) so we’ll have to find a different server first.

But an email newsletter sounds great!

    -Paul

  10. Well done folks, and welcome to weblog-dom!

Are you planning a regular email newsletter – the plugin subscribe does this automagically, and I’d certainly sign up.

And, finally, thanks for the link!

    Gav
